NuMusic Festival 2009 / 2010

NuMusic Festival 2009 / 2010

Client

NuMusic Festival, a music and visual arts festival in Stavanger. The music festival being the main attraction, with a sub branded street art event named NuArt hosting an exhibition throughout the city for free.

Problem

The musical festivals alternative and diverse mix of acts made for an interesting case. International renowned acts mixed with local upcomers, both at concerts halls and club venues located around town. The large focus on electronic and experimental music gave it huge recognition in europe as being one of the big destinations for club goers. They needed their profile to reflect and build on these expectations.
Previous years had led them too use streetartists and illustrators that contributed to NuArt, to create artwork for promotion and connect the two cultural events. This without any real guidelines or concept for the outcome, making the personal style of the creator the identity each year.

Solution

Developing a concept focusing on a few consistent key elements of the festival, mixing figurative symbols of senses used in experiencing the events and it's surroundings.
We made theme illustrations and websites for 2009 & 2010. The concept artwork was also used in marketing material such as flyers, posters and projected visuals at events.
The dark and light grotesque mix and contrast yields a feeling of a Stavanger uniqueness in an otherwise conservative environment. This contrast provides both national and international visitors a new image of the newly rich city from oil production. The illustrations have different elements that represent the architecture of the city, as well as fishing, and the oil culture itself. This is undoubtedly one of the richest cities in Norway and moreover is a vital player to Norway's overall success.
